Streamline Percussion

Greetings!  My name is Charles Cantrell Jr.   I was a student of David Steinquist of Austin Peay State University for 3 years. I have been writing and teaching percussion for almost 10 years, mostly in the Clarksville and Nashville TN areas, though I have also taught in Ohio and Kentucky.  I have written parts for several schools in these areas and am now available to write drum and percussion parts for  high school bands  anywhere.  Please take a look at the services I am offering (which also includes instruction) and if you have any questions you can reach me by email at: Iteachpercussion@woh.rr.com  or by phone at:  937-570-8774

Warm-ups, Cadences, Percussion features--- I offer two types of warm-ups, cadences, and percussion features- prewritten and custom.   All of the prewritten works are designed to basic skill levels.  They include instrumentation that can be adapted to fit your bands needs.   The custom works are designed for your bands specific needs and wants.  You tell me the instrumentation of your line, their skill level, and any ideas you want included, and I take care of the rest.  All custom parts are only used once, and only for the school that orders them.  Prewritten works are used for any one that orders them.

Marching Band Shows --- One of the most frustrating things about marching band is getting a quality drum book written.  By quality I mean one that fits the music, enhances the music and fits your drumlines needs.  It seems almost every band director has this problem.  Most "factory" drum parts are only one step above a click track.  Most arrangers prefer not to write the drum book for a variety of reasons.  Many percussion instructors are good teachers, but not the best writers.  However, I will do that job for you.  I have written parts for several schools in the Clarksville and Nashville TN area.  I am now broadening this service out.  I write parts that fit the music and enhance the general music and general effect scores.  I will also write the parts so that it fits your percussion section.  You will be the only school to receive your parts.  I will not write a show for one school and then use it for another and another.

Guide to Skill Levels---

Easy-  This is for young players who are still learning the basics of percussion.  Often times these are players who are not originally percussionist but out of necessity have become percussionist.  These parts do not include in diddle work and only a few closed rolls, Simple accent patterns and simple rhythms.

Moderate-  This is for players that have the basics down and are learning how to implement "musical expression" into their play.  These parts include some simple diddle work, more rolls, some open rolls, and a lot more work with accents and dynamics.

Advanced-  This is for the drumline that has solid players who understand and implement the basics.  They play musically and have decent technique.  These parts include diddle work, a lot of rudimental play, cross rhythms inside the section, open rolls, complicated accent patterns.

Corps Style- This is reserved for drumlines that have the ability to play very complex parts.  The parts are written to make use of hybrid "corps" rudiments, alternate stickings, and lots of notes.

I have found that the majority of high school lines fall in the upper part of moderate to the advanced skill levels.  Do not be afraid to push your line. Also, it is helpful if you can rate each part of your line.  For example, if you have outstanding snare players and a bass line made up of freshman who can barely count,   I can write the parts  accordingly.  So if you can take the time to rate these areas it is helpful---Snares, Tenors, Bass Drums, Mallets, and Auxiliary.
